Please note: this event has been postponed until the 15th of December

“It’s time to tighten our belts, but not around the necks of students.” The audience agreed with the memorable line asserted by the opposition, who persuaded the house against a rise in tuition fees. Congratulations to Matthew Burgess for winning best speaker.

This week, we’re holding our final event of the term. To celebrate, we’ll be throwing a Christmas bash with plenty of pizza, wine, assorted nibbles and comic debate. We won’t be sticking to a single motion, but there’ll be several unusual ones. A few examples which may or may not appear on Wednesday evening:

    • “This House Believes Alex Ferguson is not Scottish”
    • “This House Believes the only way is Essex”
    • “This House Would punish bad parking with the death penalty”

All who want to participate won’t know they’re arguing until they’re at the front with the motion displayed on screen, and speaking time is limited to one minute. The best speech, as judged by a panel of three, will win a £15 iTunes voucher. So, take a break from your upcoming coursework deadlines for the food, drink and laughs!

    See you on Wednesday!

Wednesday’s debate on whether to regulate Facebook saw a lively debate between eight individuals with very different views of the social network and how it impacts our lives. The opposition called for individuals to ‘self-regulate’ Facebook, but the proposition swayed the house with calls for stringent mechanisms for regulations. Congratulations to Monifa (3rd Opp) for winning best speaker.

We also held our trials for the upcoming King’s College IV. Those taking part were informed of the motion fifteen minutes before the debate began (as is customary at competitions) with four spots up for grabs. The motion discussed was “This House Supports Violent Direct Action”. The quality of the debate was high, particularly given the complexity of the motion, and so I’m very pleased to announce that Zhanging, Monifa, Oliver H. and Josh will be representing Kent Debating this weekend. Congratulations are due to Zhanging, who delivered an excellent summation speech in both of Wednesday’s debates.

This week, we’re discussing the most contemporary and pertinent topic facing students: This House Supports the Rise in Tuition Fees. The proposition have the task of creating a mechanism that justifies the increase in fees but also takes into account the possibility of cuts to education as well. If you’re interested in speaking let us know!

    See you on Wednesday!

This week we are running a joint event with Kent CLG (Critcal Lawyers Group).

We will be hosting two guest speakers to speak on this issue, as well as a debate between a team from KDS and CLG. The motion for the debate being This House would prosecute illegal file sharers. Come along for some informative and fruitful debate on this contentious issue. We hope to see you there!
