UPDATE: You can now vote online until 12pm 31st March.

Kent Debating had another eventful week. On Wednesday, we held an enjoyable debate on the European Union; Congratulations to the Proposition for swaying the House and to Sulaiman (3rd Prop) for winning best speaker. On Friday we also held a pilot of Kent Debating Society Radio on CSRfr, in which we held a debate over recorded lectures. We hope to make this a regular fixture in our calendar so as to garner more exposure and provide more opportunities for our members. Many thanks are due to everyone who made the event possible!

This is our final event of the year, so we’ll be electing a new committee for next year, enjoying each other’s company and celebrating a very successful year of debating. All members are welcome, and there’ll be food and drink provided. We’ll kick off at 6pm in Keynes LT5 on Wednesday the 30th.

To stand for a position in next year’s committee, email a manifesto to secretary@kentdebating.co.uk by Midnight on Tuesday the 29th.

Wednesday’s debate on the motion This House Believes Britain is Broken, whilst not of the most stellar quality, made for an entertaining and enjoyable evening. The proposition were unable to convince the audience that Britain is truly broken, with the opposition winning the audience’s vote. Congratulations to Neil Davis (2nd Opp) for winning best speaker.

This week we stick with domestic policy with the motion This House Would Give Prisoners the Vote. This motion reflects the current debate brought about by the recent decision to give prisoner’s the vote for elections to the European Parliament.

As always, be sure to sign up as a member here for the chance to take part in Inter-Varsity competitions, a copy of our debating handbook and free pizza at our Christmas event. Also, our newly designed hoodies are available for £21.

    See you on Wednesday!

Last night’s debate on pornography was further testament to the enthusiasm of many of our new members and first time debaters, as the quality of our debates grows in leaps and bounds every week. The proposition managed to persuade the house with a narrow, but well defined, motion. This is reflected in the choice of best speaker of the night, which went to Monifa (1st Prop).

Next week we’ll be debating the motion This House Would Not Support Israel, a great opportunity for those of you doing International Law or International Relations as part of your degree. If you’re interested in speaking, drop us an email!

We’ll also be hosting our elections next week, with many positions available. To recap and clarify, here’s a quick guide to the positions up for grabs:

President: figurehead of the society, ultimately responsible for everything the society does.
Vice-President: assists the president and holds him/her accountable for their actions.
Secretary: organises the day to day business of the society, responsible for correspondence and the smooth running of the society.
Treasurer: responsible for all financial aspects of the society, such as funding, sponsorship, accounts and membership fees.
Debate Convenor: responsible for all debates, including competitions at the University of Kent and attendance at Inter Varsity and Schools Competitions.
Social Secretary: responsible for organising socials, drink deals, and dinners.

So, if you’re interested in any of the positions above let us know. Manifestos are due by 8pm on the 31st of October.

As it’s election night, there’ll be free pizza and drinks so make sure you don’t miss out by signing up here.

    See you on Wednesday!
