Wednesday’s debate on whether to give prisoner’s the vote was one of good quality and typical of what we have always hoped to achieve with the Kent Debating Society; an intimate environment where everyone and anyone can better their public speaking skills, inform themselves on contemporary issues and have a great laugh within the space of an hour. The final vote on the debate reached a tie (the society’s first) so credit is due to both sides of the house. Particular congratulations go to Zhiang for winning best speaker.

Next week’s motion is This House Would Regulate Facebook. The Proposition have the task of outlining what form any regulation would take, and why it is necessary.

Also, we’ll be sending two teams to the Kings College Inter-Varsity competition on the 4th of December, so we’ll be holding try-outs after the debate. The motion will be announced after the Facebook debate, and those of you trying out will then have fifteen minutes to prepare (the same format used at IV’s). Remember that you need to be a member to take part in the try-out, so be sure to register if you’re interested.

Finally, remember to get yourself a hoody soon if you’d like one, as our online marketplace closes at the end of the month.

    See you on Wednesday!

Wednesday’s debate on the motion This House Believes Britain is Broken, whilst not of the most stellar quality, made for an entertaining and enjoyable evening. The proposition were unable to convince the audience that Britain is truly broken, with the opposition winning the audience’s vote. Congratulations to Neil Davis (2nd Opp) for winning best speaker.

This week we stick with domestic policy with the motion This House Would Give Prisoners the Vote. This motion reflects the current debate brought about by the recent decision to give prisoner’s the vote for elections to the European Parliament.

As always, be sure to sign up as a member here for the chance to take part in Inter-Varsity competitions, a copy of our debating handbook and free pizza at our Christmas event. Also, our newly designed hoodies are available for £21.

    See you on Wednesday!

Last night’s debate on Israel was particularly engaging, and we saw many passionate and engaging speeches from both sides of the house. Unfortunately, neither side fully addressed the motion, but there were several rousing speeches concerning the nature of the Israeli state which made for a very enjoyable evening. The opposition managed to persuade the house in favour of supporting Israel through a narrow vote that concluded the evening. Congratulations to Matthew Burgess (3rd Opp) for winning best speaker and also to Jussinius for winning an honourable mention for his rousing speech. I’d also like to thank the Kent Palestine Solidarity Group for attending and advertising our event to their members.

Our elections last night created this year’s committee with myself, Matt and Ben re-elected to our positions and Oliver Hartland to the position of Debate Convenor. We are still looking to fill the position of Social Secretary and Vice-President, so if you’re interested get in touch.

Next week, we return to domestic issues with This House Believes Britain is Broken. Speakers need to carefully define what aspects of Britain are broken as this motion allows for a broad criticism of British culture, society and politics.  Send us an email if you wish to speak.

As always, be sure to sign up for membership if you’d like to attend our Christmas event, a copy of our debating handbook and a chance to attend IV’s later in the year.

    See you on Wednesday!
