Bearing in mind that the University of Kent brands itself as the ‘UK’s European University’, we felt our term card would have suffered without the inclusion of a debate on the EU. As always, it’ll be held in Keynes LT5 at 6pm this Wednesday.

    See you all there!

Please note: this event has been postponed until the 15th of December

“It’s time to tighten our belts, but not around the necks of students.” The audience agreed with the memorable line asserted by the opposition, who persuaded the house against a rise in tuition fees. Congratulations to Matthew Burgess for winning best speaker.

This week, we’re holding our final event of the term. To celebrate, we’ll be throwing a Christmas bash with plenty of pizza, wine, assorted nibbles and comic debate. We won’t be sticking to a single motion, but there’ll be several unusual ones. A few examples which may or may not appear on Wednesday evening:

    • “This House Believes Alex Ferguson is not Scottish”
    • “This House Believes the only way is Essex”
    • “This House Would punish bad parking with the death penalty”

All who want to participate won’t know they’re arguing until they’re at the front with the motion displayed on screen, and speaking time is limited to one minute. The best speech, as judged by a panel of three, will win a £15 iTunes voucher. So, take a break from your upcoming coursework deadlines for the food, drink and laughs!

    See you on Wednesday!

This weekend, Kent Debating took a trip to London to participate at King’s College London’s IV competition. Unfortunately, due to a few train cancellations because of weather conditions one of the teams had to be dropped, so Monifa and Oliver H. spent the day gaining experience as judges. Nonetheless, it was a great opportunity for all who came to meet others from the debating circuit, as well as get some invaluable feedback from more experienced debaters and judges. Kent A (Joshua Gibbs and Zhang Zhing) had the following motions before them throughout the day:

    • THW allow parents to cast proxy votes on behalf of their children (2nd Place)
    • THW Would abolish affirmative action in the admission process of US universities. (4th Place)
    • THB that the UK should withhold aid funding from countries that criminalize homosexuality. (1st Place)
    • THB that countries that accept EU bailouts should surrender control of fiscal policy to the European Commission for a designated period of time. (3rd Place)

When it came to the draw, Kent A were one point away from the possibility of breaking, making this an excellent start to IV debating for Josh and Zhang. This is a testament to their enthusiasm and debating skills. Well done!

For those of you that couldn’t attend this time, or who are interested in going, we’ll be organising many more IV trips next term.
