Thanks very much to everyone who attended our debate on the legalisation of drugs, and many thanks to Steve Uglow, our guest lecturer for the evening.
Next week, we’ll be running two separate events. A training session at 6pm on Tuesday, and a debate on Abortion on Thursday at 8pm.
On Tuesday the 11th, at 6pm in Keynes LT6, we’ll be holding our first member’s only training session. We’ll be running a workshop on the specifics of the British Parliamentary debate format, as well as the more general aspects of public speaking and argument. We also plan to give all who attend a copy of our Beginner’s Guide to Debating Handbook.
Be sure to come along if there are career ambitions that this workshop can help you realise, if you want to improve your public speaking more generally, or if you simply enjoy disagreeing with people. We’ll also be topping off the evening with another social.
As noted, this is a members only event, so if you’d like to attend make sure you sign up as a member on our Kent Union page, or by paying cash in the Mandela building.
On Thursday the 13th, at 8pm in Keynes College in KLT 5 we’ll be hosting a debate on Abortion with Julian Brazier, Conservative MP for Canterbury and Whitstable, and Mairead Enright of Kent’s Law School. All are welcome to attend this debate, and there will be an opportunity to ask our guest speakers plenty of questions.
Also, Kent Debating Radio, our CSRfm speech show, will be airing on Monday from 7-8pm. We’ll be hosting a debate between the Presidents of the University of Kent’s LibDem, Labour and Conservative student societies. We hope this debate will illuminate the key differences between the parties, particularly with regard to policies that impact students, so be sure to tune in! Tom Ritchie, President of Kent’s Student Union, will also be making an appearance.
I hope to see you at our events throughout the week!
