Nominations are open for our committee elections. There are three positions open to any member of the Society:

    • SecretaryThis position requires someone with high organisational skills. The Secretary is responsible for all correspondence, taking minutes at meetings and making sure that the Society is working efficiently and effectively, primarily by chasing up other members of the committee to make sure they’re pulling their weight.

    • Publicity and Socials OfficerThe Publicity and Socials officer is in charge of organising the Society’s publicity (such as term cards, posters and leaflets) and any socials and non-debate events that we run.

    • Media OfficerThe Media officer is responsible for two things. Firstly, this position is dedicated to running Kent Debating on CSRfm, our new radio show. However, the media officer will also look to expand the means in which the Society interacts with members, the university and the wider community.

To stand, visit our Kent Union page and nominate yourself for a position! (Don’t forget to Log In using your KentID)

Thanks to those of you that came to Tuesday’s debate on autocrats, and congratulations to Oscar (4th Opp) for winning best speaker.

This week, we’ll be running another training session. Everyone will have a chance to debate and receive feedback from experienced debaters, in a series of smaller debates on the motion This house would not use public funds for life extending medical care. This is a great opportunity to work on your public speaking, particularly in preparation for mooting or IV competitions. As always, we’ll be in Keynes LT6, on Tuesday at 6pm.

This is a members only event, so be sure to buy a membership by either visiting our Kent Union page, or by paying cash in Mandela.

Also, we’ll be heading to two competitions this weekend; if you are interested in going to either Bath or Imperial IV make sure you come to our training session on Tuesday night.

I hope those of you who attended our open debate on abortion thoroughly enjoyed the enthusiastic discussion and argument that it provoked! Many thanks to all of you who came along and packed Keynes LT5 beyond capacity, and many thanks to our panelists, Julian Brazier MP and Máireád Enright.

Next week, we’ll be turning our attention to international politics with the motion This House Would Grant Amnesty to Autocrats Who Step Down. Alex Magaisa of Kent’s Law School will be giving a short talk before the debate. This promises to be another excellent event, and we’ll be heading to K-Bar for drinks afterwards, so be sure to come along! As always, we’re hosting the debate in Keynes LT6 on Tuesday at 6pm.

Also, we are heading to our first competitions of the year at the end of this month. We have three teams registered for Bath IV, which is held on the 29th and 30th of October. If you are interested in attending make sure you attend this week’s debate. More details about this soon, but be sure to save the date if you would like to get involved.

Remember, you can only attend competitions if you have signed up for membership.

Kent Debating will also be on CSRfm again on Monday from 7-8pm, tune in for some more excellent debate!

I look forward to seeing you all next week!
