  • This House Would Legalise All Drugs

Thanks very much to everyone who attended our first event of the year on Tuesday night, and congratulations to the opposition for winning yesterday’s debate. Also, congratulations to Nisha (1st Proposition), yesterday’s best speaker.

Next week, we’ll be debating the motion This House Would Legalise All Drugs. Steve Uglow of Kent’s Law School will be our guest lecturer for the evening, so be sure to attend if you wish to enlighten yourself on this contemporary issue. We’ll be hosting the debate in Keynes LT6, at 6pm this Tuesday.

This is a topic that has a great deal of contemporary relevance, and one on which many hold very strong views, which can often obscure the fundamental issues at stake, such as the extent to which the individual should decide upon how they go about their lives, and the extent to which drug use harms others. To get a sense of the debate, here are a few articles that are worth reading.

Julian Critchley arguing for an end to prohibition (The Independent)

    Against Legalising Marijuana (Prospect)

Transform Drug Policy Foundation Paper on Prohibition

Alex Deane’s Rebuttal of Pro-Legalisation Arguments

As always, feel free to come along whether you wish to speak your mind or whether this is a topic that sparks your interest and you want to watch a lively debate. We’ll also be heading to K-Bar afterwards for another mini social.

Don’t forget that you can also sign up to join the Kent Debating Society by visiting our Kent Union page.

I hope you’ve had an enjoyable first week of term, and I look forward to seeing you next week!

  • This House Believes Nuclear Weapons Make the World Safer

    9:14 pm on September 21, 2011 | 0 Permalink | Log in to leave a Comment

The fact that nuclear weapons have the potential to wipe out all life on earth has not stifled debate over whether or not they are in fact beneficial to international peace and stability. Indeed, in the 1980′s, Kenneth Waltz, a prominent International Relations scholar, advocated spreading nuclear weapons to states to better the chances of world peace, while there have also been a swathe of disarmament campaigns, the most recent being Global Zero.

KDS is hosting this debate to help unravel this complex topic and to provide an opportunity to all to voice their opinion on the matter. Govinda Clayton, lecturer in International Conflict Analysis at Kent, will also be giving a short lecture on the issue before our debate. The debate will be held in Keynes LT6, at 6pm this Tuesday.

This is Kent Debating’s first event of the academic year, and all are welcome to a debate that is set to be interesting, exciting and engaging. Be sure to come along! Don’t forget that you can also sign up to become a member of Kent Debating for a small fee of £3.

    See you on Tuesday!

Hello and welcome to all returning and future members of the Kent Debating Society!

This is a big year for Kent Debating, with a packed schedule of weekly debates, training sessions and trips to national and international competitions already on the calendar.

Competitive debating instills the ability to speak persuasively, confidently and intelligently in a public setting, providing debaters with advantages on a number of levels. That, in conjunction with our informative guest lectures and rowdy socials make the debating experience at Kent well worth getting involved in!

You’ll be able to find us at the Fresher’s Fayre on the 22nd and 23rd between 1-6pm, our social next week (details TBC) or you can drop us an email at info@kentdebating.co.uk. Myself and the rest of the committee are looking forward to meeting you.

Just a note for the regulars: our debates have moved from Wednesday to Tuesday, and we’re now in KLT6 rather than KLT5.

    Oliver Blackley
    President
