The Kent Debating Society ran two events this week. We held our debate on feminism in conjunction with International Women’s Day and our debate between Kent Union’s Presidential candidates. In short, the opposition trumped their opponents in an enjoyable debate, and Tom Ritchie, Ed Atkins and Alex Murray demonstrated good speaking skills and a clear ‘line’ behind their campaigns. Congratulations to Fiona Brittle for winning best speaker in our debate, and congratulations to Tom Ritchie for being elected Kent Union President on Friday night.

This week we’ll be holding a screening of ‘Inside Job’ (Dir. Charles Ferguson), which is an excellent documentary on the human and institutional failures of 2008′s Great Recession. We’re going to use the screening as a segue to a short discussion and debate on the topic of dishonesty in governance. As always, we’ll be meeting this Wednesday in Keynes LT5 at 6pm.

I also have some bad news concerning the Royal Holloway IV. Despite the excellent preparation and very clear potential exhibited at our trials, the teams were unable to go because of transportation difficulties. We’re all very disappointed, but rest assured there’ll be future opportunities to partake on the IV circuit!

    See you on Wednesday!

We’re hosting a debate between the Presidential Candidates in Keynes LT5 at 6pm on Thursday the 10th of March. We feel that this will be the most democratic and accountable event on the Kent Union calendar, so come along to make an informed decision when you cast your vote for Kent Union President.

To recap, here are your Presidential candidates:

Also, even if you can’t make it to our event, do make sure you vote!

Our debate on Western involvement in the Middle East gave primacy to upholding liberal norms, as the opposition persuaded the house that spreading western ideas and values would lead to a more harmonious world order.

Also, our trials for the upcoming Royal Holloway IV produced another riveting debate on the motion This House Would Ban Abortion. Well done to everyone who took part, and congratulations to those of you who were selected to attend Royal Holloway this weekend.

We are running two events this week. On Wednesday, we’ll be hosting a debate on feminism in conjunction with International Women’s Week. The motion for this debate will be This House Believes Feminism Undermines Equality. The speakers in this debate will have to specifically outline the notion of equality that feminism undermines or supports, and the reasons why it impacts society in the way it does. Come along to enlighten yourselves on the issue or to speak your mind this Wednesday at 6pm in Keynes Lecture Theatre 5.

We’re also running a debate between the presidential candidates in this year’s Kent Union election this Thursday at 6pm in Keynes Lecture Theatre 5. This will be an excellent chance for the candidates to outline their positions and policies on the numerous issues that affect students. It will also be an excellent chance for everyone else to ask questions of those wanting to represent them, and play a part in Kent Union’s election process.
