Last week’s debate about the UK’s necessity for Trident saw a win for those proposing that Britain does, in fact, need a nuclear deterrent. The opposition did point out that the current threat doesn’t lie with states, but the proposition persuaded the house of the necessity for the “ultimate life insurance” for a state. Congratulations to Oliver Hartland (2nd Prop) who was the night’s best speaker.

This week, we’ll be debating about the Middle East with the motion This House Believes that Middle Eastern Affairs are none of the West’s business. This, of course, is of particular significance given the so-called “Arab Spring”, with unrest and full blown revolution taking place across the region. Does the West have a responsibility to the region? Is it even capable of acting in a manner that can benefit the region in the long run? Enlighten yourself on the issue or speak your mind this Wednesday, at 6pm in Keynes LT5.

We’ll also be hosting our trials for the Royal Holloway IV this week. We’ll be sending two teams and a judge, so if you’d like to attend the competition on Sunday the 13th of March make sure you come along for the trial, which will take place after the Middle East debate. The motion for that debate will be announced 15 minutes before it begins, as is customary at IV competitions.

    See you on Wednesday!

Wednesday’s debate was settled by a strong proposition persuading the house that the British model of multiculturalism has failed, and that a new approach to cultural integration is necessary. Congratulations to Zhangning for winning best speaker with an excellent extension. (3rd Prop)

This week, we’ll be debating the motion This House Believes the UK Needs Trident. Does the UK require a nuclear deterrent, and to what extent are their future use likely? These questions will doubtlessly be addressed this Wednesday, so if you’re interested in speaking or learning more about the issue come along to Keynes Lecture Theatre 5 at 6pm.

Also, we’ll be holding our Royal Holloway IV trials on the 2nd of March, so if you’re interested in competing let us know!

    See you on Wednesday!

Our debate on whether to directly elect diplomats, whilst lending itself to an Opposition victory from the premise, was nonetheless entertaining and interesting and provocative points were raised on both sides of the house. Congratulations to Sulaiman (1st Opp) for winning best speaker.

This week, we turn our attention to domestic politics and a particular issue raised by David Cameron at the Munich Security Conference last week; This House Believes British Multiculturalism has failed. Is it true that “the doctrine of state multiculturalism” has lead to a “passive tolerance” that leads to the alienation of demographics throughout British society, or are there other factors that are of greater significance? This boils down to a conception of what makes an ‘equal’ in society, and should make for a very interesting debate. Below are a few links to help you get an idea of the bigger picture.

As always, come along if you’d like to speak, listen, or take part in our preliminary discussion. We’ll also be hosting trials on the 2nd of March for the IV at Royal Holloway, which takes place on the weekend of the 13th of March, so save those dates if you’re interested in competing.

    See you on Wednesday!
