The Opposition persuaded the house against privatising the BBC on Wednesday’s debate, emphasising the importance of the news organisation as a public good. The Proposition urged the need for reform because of a need for sustainable funding and the intrinsically coercive nature of the Licence Fee system. Overall, this was a debate of high quality on a traditional yet contemporary issue. Congratulations to Neil Davis (3rd Prop) for winning best speaker.

This week, we are holding our trials for Inner Temple IV in conjunction with the Temple Society. We are planning on sending two teams. The competition will take place over the course of the weekend from the 4th to the 5th of February in central London. Anyone who is interested in greatly improving their debating skills, particularly if you are looking to work towards becoming a barrister, be sure to try out! More information here.

The trials will be a regular British Parliamentary debate with a motion revealed on the evening. This will be a test of general knowledge, flexibility and debating ability; all essential for any IV competitor. Our trials have created some excellent debate in the past, so do come along whether you wish to compete or just observe. As well as the debate on show there’ll also be wine, pre-debate discussion and drinks in K-Bar afterwards.

    See you on Wednesday!

Wednesday’s debate on Wikileaks gave the opposition the opportunity to nail home arguments about the unfair damage to certain businesses and lack of accountability to the organisation, as well as the benefits of a degree of secrecy, which convinced the audience more than the propositions defence of the right to free speech and openness. Congratulations to Ben Bowles (4th Opp) for winning best speaker.

This week, we return to an often debated domestic topic; This House Would Privatise the BBC. Should the UK maintain its current Licence Fee system? What would the nature of a replacement mechanism be?  Does government funding always lead to an intrinsic bias in a news organisation? These are all pertinent points that will have to be brought to the table at Wednesday’s debate.

To help with your research, here are an assortment of websites discussing the issue:

So, to inform yourself about the issue or to argue your case, join us this Wednesday in Keynes Lecture Theatre 5 at 6pm. We’ll also be heading to K-Bar after the debate for our routine drinks.

    See you on Wednesday!

    Welcome back everyone!

I hope you’ve had a comfortable, relaxing and enjoyable Christmas break. We’re looking forward to seeing you all refreshed and ready for our first debate of 2011, which will be This House Supports Wikileaks.

Is complete transparency appropriate or helpful in international politics? Should governments have the right to keep their affairs secret? Is Wikileaks a rightful arbiter of openness in governance?  Is Julian Assange a cyber-terrorist? To make or hear the case for these questions be sure to come along on Wednesday at 6pm in Keynes Lecture Theatre 5.

There’ll be complimentary wine and soft-drinks on offer for those who attend as well as a good helping of laughs and, most importantly, enthusiastic debate!

Also, our Kent Debating Hoodies have arrived! Those of you that bought yourselves one will be able to pick it up this Wednesday. If you would like to purchase one, let us know you’re interested and we’ll set about getting another batch organised.

See you on Wednesday and best wishes for the Spring Term!
