Medicinal CannabisThanks to everyone who turned up to our open debate this Wednesday with Julian Brazier MP, Owen Lyne (UCU) and Usman Ali (NUS) on the topic of funding for higher education. We heard strong arguments from all three panellists, and the MP for Canterbury and Whitstable used the opportunity to announce that he is not in favour of a rise in tuition fees. A high turnout and questions from an engaged audience made for a successful evening, and we hope to run similar events in the near future.

Next week, we return to our standard format of debating in Keynes Lecture Theatre 5. This week’s motion is one that is given particular relevance by the upcoming vote on Proposition 19 in California: This House Would Legalise Drugs. This is a tricky one for the Proposition to get right, as an excellent definition is needed from the first half of the table. (For example, should the law allow for the limited sale of ‘soft drugs’, or should it let you pick up a line of cocaine from your local off-license?) If you’re interested in speaking drop us an email and we’ll reserve you a slot.

Also, be sure to buy your membership here, as we’ll be handing out our Beginner’s Guide to Debating to all members this week.

I hope that the start of the new academic year has treated you all well so far, and I hope to see you on Wednesday!

Finally, the long anticipated first debate of this academic year kicked off on Wednesday night, and it was fantastic to see so many first time speakers experiencing the excitement of a debate.

Congratulations to the Opposition for convincing the house against the practice of capital punishment, and congratulations to Vish (1st Prop) for winning best speaker of the night. Despite the proposition getting off to a rousing start, I think the opposition were helped by the more pragmatic than principled arguments of their opponents.

Next Wednesday, contrary to the term card released on our flyers, Kent Debating is hosting a special debate on the subject of cuts to higher education with Julian Brazier, the local MP for Canterbury, and Usman Ali, the Vice-President of  Higher Education from the National Union of Students. The debate will take place in the Grimond Building on Wednesday the 6th from 5pm, so make sure you attend for an opportunity to question the speakers, gain a broader knowledge on the issues of funding in higher education, and for the free food and wine afterwards.

Also, I’d urge you to buy a Kent Debating Membership by following this link. Membership will get you a Kent Debating handbook put together by previous and current committee members as well as drink deals in K-Bar during our après-debate socials.

So, thanks again to all of you who attended our debate on Wednesday night, and to those of you who couldn’t make it there will be plenty of opportunities to take part over the coming weeks!
