The Past, Present and Future of Guantanamo Bay: Thursday 18/03/10 17:00-20:00 KLT1

Centre for American Studies, Kent Current Affairs Society, Kent Debating Society and UKC Amnesty International Society present:
THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE OF GUANTÁNAMO

To mark the 7th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, a new documentary film “Outside the Law: Stories from Guantánamo” will be shown on the 18th March at the University of Kent.

The screening will be followed by questions and answers session with FORMER GUANTÁNAMO PRISONER Omar Deghayes and the co-director of the film, Andy Worthington.

THIS IS AN OPEN EVENT, so please invite anyone who might be interested!

“Outside the Law: Stories from Guantánamo” tells the story of Guantánamo, and includes sections on “extraordinary rendition” and secret prisons, explaining how the Bush administration turned its back on domestic and international laws, how prisoners were rounded up in Afghanistan and Pakistan without adequate screening (and often for bounty payments), and why some of these men may have been in Afghanistan or Pakistan for reasons unconnected with militancy or terrorism (as missionaries or humanitarian aid workers, for example).

    Wednesday 17/03/10 DLT2 6pm

Just while most the country is celebrating St Patrick’s Day, KDS will be asking why we don’t do more to celebrate the national holiday of our own national patron.

The prop. will be arguing for a national holiday for St Georges Day, a fairly simple week to have a go at first speaker. They will want to outline the problems currently, perhaps the shame attached to English nationalism, perhaps the way fascist organisations have hijacked the flag of St George. Then they will want to demonstrate why making this change is necessary and why it will improve the current situation. They may even want to talk about the benefits giving us all another day off would have!

The opposition, however, will probably want to focus on these aforementioned issues as reasons not to celebrate St Georges Day. Is he really a Saint of Englishness after all?

    As always start with debatabase.

This week we are running a joint event with Kent CLG (Critcal Lawyers Group).

We will be hosting two guest speakers to speak on this issue, as well as a debate between a team from KDS and CLG. The motion for the debate being This House would prosecute illegal file sharers. Come along for some informative and fruitful debate on this contentious issue. We hope to see you there!
