Kent Union elections are fast approaching, as a society based on free speech and democracy we urge our members to get involved with the elections.

This year Kent Debating will be getting involved in the campaign process by running events, more information on this will follow nearer the time.

But for now check out the site @ kentunionelections.co.uk

The issue is a classic one. The prop have a lot of flexibility here in determining where the policy will be implemented and would be best advised to persue a relatively limited approach. As a consequence the opposition will need to be on their toes and not fall victim of poor pre-emption.

Should the UK follow the lead of countries such as France that have clamped down on the wearing of religious symbols or should the government stay well away from interfering with an individual’s freedom of expression?

Should autonomy prevail even when such symbols can be interpreted to perpetuate misogynistic practices, or is such a response a result of intolerance rather than a desire to protect certain rights?

These are all questions that a good debate will answer and I regret being unable to attend this one!

As always, start with debatabase for your research.

Time for us to head into a bit of unchartered, and controversial, territory. This coming Wednesday we will be challenging one of the fundamental pillars of our society: monogamy.

The proposition will want to portray the concept of having a single partner as an unrealistic and archaic practice. They may want to emphasise the practical problems it creates, perhaps referring to divorce statistics as well as any they can find on couples who cheat on each other.

The opposition will want to defend such an important value. They may want to urge the support for a practice that encourages trust and stability between individuals, statistics on the damage polygamy can do to families and relationships.

A summary of the issues: http://www.idebate.org/debatabase/topic_details.php?topicID=220
